How Does the iPhone Hidden Album Work With iCloud? And What a Vault Does Differently

What syncing means for a hidden photo

Hiding a photo changes where it appears inside Photos. The photo stays in your Photos library, but it moves into the Hidden album instead of appearing with your normal library view.^1,3

When iCloud Photos is on, that hidden photo is still part of the library that iCloud Photos keeps in sync. Apple says a photo hidden on one device is hidden on your other devices too, as long as those devices are using iCloud Photos with the same Apple Account.^1,2

When iCloud Photos is off on this iPhone, hiding a photo does not turn iCloud Photos syncing on. The Hidden album still changes where that item appears inside Photos.^1,2

Check whether your Hidden album is using iCloud Photos

These settings answer two different questions. iCloud Photos decides whether the photo library syncs through iCloud, while the Hidden album controls decide how hidden items appear and how the album is opened.^1,2,3

Who can open a synced Hidden album?

On iPhone, the Hidden album uses the phone's own device authentication. It can be opened with Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode, so it does not give the album a separate password of its own.^1,3

If iCloud Photos is on, the hidden state follows the photo to other devices using the same Apple Account. On each device, access to the Hidden album depends on that device's authentication.^1,2,3

That matters if another person knows the iPhone passcode or if the same Apple Account is used on another device. If your question is what Apple itself can access, that is a separate privacy question.^1,2,3

A local vault keeps its copy out of iCloud Photos

Secure Folder: Privacy Vault uses a different storage model. Photos, videos, and files imported into the vault stay on the iPhone in the app's protected storage. Nothing is uploaded, it uses no iCloud, and it needs no account or email.

Because the vault copy is outside the Photos library, iCloud Photos does not sync that copy to your other devices. This is useful when your goal is to keep selected private photos on the iPhone instead of having those copies follow the same iCloud Photos library.

Importing a photo does not remove the original by itself

When you import a photo into Secure Folder, the vault receives a copy. The original stays in Photos until you choose to delete it, so that original keeps following whatever iCloud Photos setting applies to your Photos library.

If you delete the original from Photos while iCloud Photos is on, Apple says that deletion is reflected on your other devices too. The deleted item stays in Recently Deleted for 30 days unless you permanently remove it sooner.⁴

A separate PIN changes who can open the vault

Secure Folder has its own 6-digit PIN, separate from the iPhone passcode. Knowing the phone's passcode does not open the vault.

Stealth mode can also replace the app's Home Screen icon with an ordinary-looking icon, such as a calculator. The selected icon also appears in App Library and search, making the vault less obvious to someone browsing the phone.
