Does the StandBy Photos Widget Show Your Private Photos to Anyone Nearby?

Standby mode photos can appear on a charging iPhone while its StandBy Photos view is active, so someone nearby may be able to see what is on the screen. You can reduce that exposure by switching away from Photos, shortening how long StandBy stays visible, and hiding individual pictures you do not want appearing in normal Photos surfaces.

When StandBy can show photos

Apple describes StandBy as a charging display that can act as a clock, a photo frame, or a screen for widgets and Live Activities. Connect the iPhone to a charger, place it on its side, and keep it stationary. You can then swipe left or right between widgets, photos, and clocks.1

Where the phone charges also matters. With MagSafe, StandBy remembers the preferred view for each charging location, so a kitchen charger can stay on one view while the bedside charger uses another. On supported iPhones with Always-On display, StandBy can remain visible, while other models can be brought back by tapping the screen, nudging the table, or using Siri.1

What Apple says about the Photos view

Apple documents Photos as one of StandBy's main views, but does not explain how individual pictures are selected for that view. If you care about a particular photo never appearing there, it is safer to control that photo directly rather than depend on assumptions about StandBy's selection.1

There is also a Photos setting called Show Featured Content. Apple says turning it off stops Photos from automatically generating featured photos and memories in the Photos app and the Home Screen Photos widget. Apple does not state that this setting controls StandBy, so it should not be treated as a StandBy-specific privacy switch.3

How to reduce what people nearby can see

    Switch away from Photos

    Swipe left or right in StandBy to move from the Photos view to widgets or clocks when you do not want a photo filling the screen.1

    Shorten how long the display stays visible

    StandBy's display options include Automatically, After 20 Seconds, and Never. Choosing a shorter option reduces how long the screen remains visible when the phone is sitting across the room.1

    Turn StandBy off if you do not use it

    If you do not want any StandBy view appearing while the iPhone is charging, turn StandBy off in Settings.1

For a nightstand, kitchen counter, or desk, these controls address the visible screen itself instead of relying on guesses about which picture StandBy might choose.

Where the Hidden album fits

Apple's Hidden album is a separate Photos feature. When you hide a photo or video, Apple says it moves to Hidden and stops appearing in the Photos Library, other albums, and the Home Screen Photos widget. The Hidden album is locked by default and requires authentication to open.2

If a picture is private enough that you do not want it participating in ordinary Photos surfaces, hiding it is a more direct control than trying to predict what StandBy will select. StandBy is only one place photos can surface

Changing StandBy deals with the charging display. Other Photos surfaces have their own controls, so use the setting or guidance for the place that concerns you.
