What Happens to Your Photos If You Delete a Vault App?

If I delete a photo vault, will I lose my photos? Yes, if the only copies are inside the vault app: Apple's iPhone User Guide says Delete App removes the app and its data from the iPhone. In Secure Folder: Privacy Vault, share the items out or restore them to Photos before deleting the app.

Why vault photos are deleted with the app

When a vault keeps photos in local app data, those photos are part of what Delete App removes. In Secure Folder, imported photos, videos, and files live in a separate gallery on the iPhone, outside the Photos library. If an item exists only inside that vault when you delete the app, that copy goes with the app data.1

Apple's Hidden album is different. It is a feature inside Photos and uses Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode, so it is not the same storage location as a third-party vault. Deleting a third-party vault app removes that app's data, not the Photos library itself.1,2

Move your photos out before you delete the vault

In Secure Folder, use Restore to Photos when you want selected items back in Apple's Photos app, or use Share when you want to send copies somewhere else. AirDrop is one option for sending photos, videos, documents, and other items to a nearby Apple device.3

Before you tap Delete App

    Select what you want to keep

    Open the vault and select every photo, video, or file you want to keep outside the app.

    Choose where the copy should go

    Use Restore to Photos to put the selected items back in Photos, or use Share to send them somewhere else. AirDrop works when you want to move copies to another nearby Apple device.3

    Confirm the action

    Complete the confirmation steps so the copies are actually created in the destination you chose.

    Check the copies

    Open Photos or the destination device and make sure the items are there and usable before you delete the vault app.

    Delete only after the check

    Once the copies you want to keep are confirmed, you can use Delete App. If you only wanted to save storage space, offloading may fit better because iPhone can remove an unused app while keeping its data.1,4

If you want a lasting copy rather than a one-time move, keep a separate copy outside the vault before deleting anything.

What reinstalling brings back

Apple lets you reinstall an app you previously downloaded from the App Store if it is still available. Reinstalling brings back the app itself, but it does not recreate local app data that Delete App already removed.1

For Secure Folder, use the copies you saved before deleting the app. After reinstalling, import those photos, videos, or files into the fresh vault.

Remove from Home Screen, offload, or delete?

These iPhone actions are easy to confuse. Remove from Home Screen keeps the app installed, offloading removes the app while keeping its data, and Delete App removes both the app and its local app data. iPhone can also offload unused apps automatically when storage is low.1,4

If your goal is a tidier Home Screen, Remove from Home Screen is enough. If your goal is storage space without erasing the vault's saved app data, offloading is the less destructive option. Use Delete App only after you have copied out everything you want to keep.1,4
