What Apple does when you hide an app

Apple's built-in hiding applies to apps you downloaded from the App Store. Apps that come installed on iPhone cannot be hidden this way.¹

What a disguised icon does

Secure Folder: Privacy Vault takes the icon-disguise approach. In the Security tab, Stealth mode swaps its Home Screen icon for an ordinary-looking icon such as a calculator. It changes the icon rather than moving the app into Apple's Hidden folder.

Where each approach still appears

The difference is easiest to see by looking at the places someone holding the iPhone is likely to check.

Apple's hide feature does not erase every system-level trace of an app. Apple lists Settings > Apps > Hidden Apps, Screen Time, Battery settings, and App Store purchase history as places where the names of hidden apps may still appear.²

Which approach fits what you want to hide

If your goal is to get a downloaded app off the Home Screen and out of routine search, Apple's hide feature directly does that. If what you want out of sight is private photos or files, a dedicated vault with a disguised icon addresses a different situation.¹
